Common questions

How do I save a backup, or move to a new phone?

Open Settings, then Backup and your data, and tap Save a backup. Choose where to save the file. It holds every tool. On the new phone, install Khalil, open the same section, tap Restore and pick the file. Restoring replaces everything currently in the app.

How do I delete all my data?

Open Settings, then Backup and your data, then Delete all my data. Khalil first offers to save a backup, then asks once more. You can also uninstall the app. Backup files you saved yourself stay where you put them.

The prayer times differ from my mosque.

Open Prayer times and check your city and the calculation method; ask your mosque which method it uses. You can also add minutes to each time to match your mosque. For fasting, follow your mosque when in doubt.

A prayer time notification came late, or not at all.

Allow notifications for Khalil, and on Android 12 or newer allow alarms and reminders, so the notification can come at the exact minute. Some phones stop apps in the background to save battery: in your phone’s battery settings, let Khalil run without restrictions.

Why is the Hijri date a day off?

Khalil uses the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where your community follows a local moon sighting, the months can start a day earlier or later. In Settings, under Moon sighting in your country, you can move the calendar by one day.

The Qibla compass points the wrong way.

Phone compasses are easily disturbed by magnets, cases and metal nearby. Move away from them, then move the phone in a figure of eight a few times. The bearing in degrees from north is shown too, so you can check it with another compass.

Why can’t I see the Quran reader?

In Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan, a Quran text in an app needs an official approval first, so Khalil does not show it there (and in Brunei) until it has one. Khalil decides this from your phone’s country and your city. In Hifz you then read the pages from your own printed mushaf; everything else works the same.

How do I change the language?

Open Settings and choose a language under Language, or keep “Same as my phone”. The screens, widgets and reminders all follow it. The translations are new: if something reads wrongly, please tell us.

How do I add a widget?

Open Tools, then Home screen widgets, and tap Add next to the one you want. Your phone asks where to place it. Widgets can be seen by anyone who sees your home screen, also with the app lock on.

Who can see my period dates?

Only you, on your phone. The period tool is off until you turn it on in Settings. Its dates are never copied to Android’s cloud backup, and its reminders only say “A reminder you asked for”, without a sound and hidden on the lock screen. They are in the backup file you save yourself, so keep that file private.

The gold and silver prices will not load.

Check your internet connection and try again in a minute; the price services allow only a limited number of requests. You can always type the prices yourself, and zakat is worked out the same way.

A ruling differs from what I was told.

Scholars differ, and Khalil starts from the usual position of the school you chose. You can change your school in Settings, and single rulings in the tool’s own settings, to follow your own scholar’s advice.

Report a mistake

If a result looks wrong, a ruling does not match your school, or a text has a mistake, please tell us what you entered, what Khalil showed and what you expected, with a source if you have one. We take these reports seriously and correct them.

Scholars, imams and teachers

If you are a qualified scholar or teacher and would like to review how Khalil handles a ruling or a text, we would be glad to hear from you at support@quietlightapps.win.
